Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Jane Austen’s beloved classic opens with this witty and very memorable line: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” With all the twists and turns of a soap opera, Pride and Prejudice chronicles the drama that ensues when the wealthy bachelor Mr. Darcy moves close to the Bennet family home in the English countryside. The news of his arrival sends the socially ambitious Mrs. Bennet-whose main concern is finding suitable matches for her five daughters-into overdrive.

The book’s main character, the high-spirited Elizabeth Bennet, is a strikingly modern heroine: a woman who refuses to lower her expectations or transform herself to suit society’s norms. Austen’s novel achieves a remarkable balance, serving up barbed criticism of the obsession with money, status, and matrimony even as it draws us into a swoon-worthy love story. At its heart, Pride and Prejudice is a romantic comedy, and a darned great one at that. It’s so much fun to turn the pages and wonder about Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy: Will they or won’t they overcome their excessive pride and initial prejudices to make a happily-ever-after connection?

It kept my attention throughout- loving the characters, hating the characters and feeling everything the author wanted me to feel! I loved it!!!
  • Phenomenal

I’m an old man who mostly reads history, apart from an obsession with Twain, Dickens and Hugo. But I consider the 1995 miniseries version of “Pride and Prejudice,” with its brilliant cast, one of the best TV productions ever. So I finally got around to reading the book. Amazing. Hilarious and beautifully written, with irresistibly short chapters. Couldn’t put it down. For anyone who likes the romantic style, this is as good as it gets. Why did I wait so long?

I didn't think I'd like this book as much as I did. My fourth attempt at reading it proved more than successful. I enjoyed every minute of it. My only regret is that Mr. Darcy's famous line, "You have bewitched me, body and soul," should prove to be a Hollywood addition. Alas, a writer can only do so much.
  • The art of writing gone far

    By Атрилл
I understand the revolutionary ideas of this book, but writing value is overhiped. This book is hard to read, boring and can be shrinked by half (at least). I’ve never (!) give any book less than 3 stars, but this time the writing is really deserved one.
  • A true and timeless classic.

I’ve read P&P twice before, and have seen two movie versions of it. I just finished reading the Ebook version, loved it just as much, if not more than the original. There are secondary and tertiary characters whose names I didn’t recognize, and was able to use the ‘lookup’ feature to find information about them. I still have my original hardback copy!
