Description

This riveting sequel to the “glorious and touching” (USA TODAY) #1 New York Times bestseller picks up where It Ends with Us concluded and shares what happens next for Lily and Atlas.

Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil coparenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date.

But her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, Ryle is still very much a part of her life—and Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life.

Switching between the perspectives of Lily and Atlas, It Starts with Us picks up right where the epilogue for the “gripping, pulse-pounding” (Sarah Pekkanen, New York Times bestselling author ) bestselling phenomenon It Ends with Us left off. Revealing more about Atlas’s past and following Lily as she embraces a second chance at true love while navigating a jealous ex-husband, it proves that “no one delivers an emotional read like Colleen Hoover” (Anna Todd, New York Times bestselling author).

First, I think at least some of the negative reviews come from people expecting literary fiction. Four stars here for Hoover delivering a really solid follow-up. I gather she initially self-published these online. I hadn’t read these until I heard about the movie. They are inspired by Hoover’s mother’s tragic and brave story, and Hoover is clearly so proud of her, which shines through and gives the book even more heart. This whole story is one fictional rendering in an ocean of possibilities, and I hope it inspires other authors to tell their equally individual stories. Strengths: as always, so much more to Lily than this event in her life. I was glued to the flashback of the immediate aftermath of Lily’s father’s attack on Atlas, brief but affecting. A good portion is devoted to a new, unknown character from Atlas’s family, and we see more of Atlas’s mother. Alyssa’s husband has more prominence here in places, supportively. The caring, wise middle-schooler who counsels Atlas is a surprise charmer. I would have liked to see more development of Ryle, for worse or better, and maybe linking the characters together more. There are quite a few comments here about the sex: some people say there isn’t enough of it, or it goes too far. Atlas and Lily “get down,” yes, in romance-fiction style, but that’s as far as it goes.

It was a good book, but sometimes it was just long. This one took me awhile to get through, still happy I read it though.

This book is like an ending of the first book. I like the first book more. This book is okay if you really like the first book and a happy ending.
